MLK Day of Service

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out in the cold and made our MLK Day of Service a success! Though temperatures dipped to new lows, spirits remained high as we fellowshipped and outreached in the community.  Groups dispersed throughout the neighborhood to get feedback from fellow Mt. Airy residents via community surveys. Because of your dedication and commitment to this project, we are more than halfway towards our community input goal!  The information gathered is being used to inform concrete action plans, which are being finalized to be revealed in the upcoming weeks. Stay involved by reading our long term objectives and submitting your questions, concerns, and comments to our Ideas page.

December Community Feedback & MLK Day of Service

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the December Planning Workshop! Despite the rain, we gathered many new ideas and gave away just as many recycling bins.

Now is the Time!

We are in the process of compiling all the information collected over the last six months into detailed action steps. In other words, we are reaching the end of our information gathering phase and are about to move into our implementation phase. Share your feedback now! Spend a few minutes reviewing our long term objectives. Post your comments, thoughts and questions on our Ideas Page!

Recap from the October 29 Open House

Missed the Mt. Airy 2025 Open House on October 29? Although we sadly don’t have any of Little Jimmie’s delicious treats left over, below you’ll find the info that was shared and the feedback boards that were posted during the event. (Click on each board to view full-size.) We wholeheartedly encourage you to respond to these feedback boards in the comments below! Tell us which new businesses you’d like to see open in Mt. Airy, which areas of our neighborhood warrant special attention, and any other ideas you have for our community. Your input matters and the feedback we receive will help guide Mt. Airy’s growth over the next 10 years. Questions on anything you see below? E-mail Abby Thaker at athaker@mtairyusa.org. We are also still in need of volunteers to help us reach more neighbors– please contact us for more details!

Reflections from Eastern University Survey Day

Eastern University students relax and reflect after an afternoon of Mt. Airy 2025 surveying!

Eastern University students relax and reflect after an afternoon of Mt. Airy 2025 surveying!

On September 19th, a group of nine students from Eastern University’s International Development program came to Mt. Airy as a part of their Community Development Class. They spent the afternoon assisting with the Mt. Airy 2025 resident survey. According to their professor, Leah Hood, they had a great time walking through the neighborhood, meeting residents and conducting surveys.

Mt. Airy USA, and the 2025 partners, are extremely thankful to the university students and their professor for taking an afternoon and working in our community. We wanted to highlight one students reflections on the day to give everyone a sense of the feelings students had that day:

When I was growing up my grandparents lived in Germantown, and even though I lived from 1976 to 1999 in University City, I have very little familiarity with Mt. Airy.  My loss!  My only sadness on the beautiful late summer Saturday afternoon that we spent knocking on doors, asking Mt. Airy residents to participate in the community survey process, was at how few people were at home.  On the other hand, the fact that everyone was out and about seems to show a neighborhood vitality.

Our team was quite taken with the beauty and diversity of the neighborhood, particularly with regard to the wide range of architectural styles, the many wide streets, and the huge, old trees.  We felt welcomed to the neighborhood not only by the homeowners we spoke with, but also by business owners we met when we needed snacks, and by various pedestrians with whom we shared some narrow sidewalks.

Among survey respondents we met we found interest, enthusiasm, and engagement with the community development process.  In these conversations it was clear that many different perspectives are represented, and we’re glad to have been able to encourage community members to realize the value and validity of each person’s unique viewpoint.

Thank you Kathy Hall Ditchfield, Darrin Chitwood, Victor Habib, Hannah Curry, Darryl Clear, Mike Staub, Tiffany Frank, Jessica Carey, Seth Malone for spending some time in our neighborhood. And a BIG Thank You to their wonderful teacher Leah Hood!

We will be holding one final fall Community Survey Day Saturday November 7th between 11:00-2:00pm
